I did kill the three murdering shadows, someone outside of my group may have gotten the kill shot however, why would he eat the note how ever though? Shouldnt he hand it back?

I completed this quest yesterday in its entirety and went to hand the note to the captain, he then took the note and ate it , with out giving me an amulet or the note back indicating he didnt want it. I didnt make any mistakes in the completion of the quest.
