Returning player with a couple questions

I haven't played in several years, and can't find my EQ discs anywhere. Can I download the necessary files, or do I need to buy new discs? My old characters should still be available, right?

Instalation guide in 4 steps:

1. Download EverQuest via STEAM.
2. Put the patcher downloaded from the front page into that folder and patch.
3. ???
4. Play!

And yes steam install is the only official supported client

I'm still working off of a daybreak download and haven't had any issues. (but if you're starting at this point, no reason not to go straight to the Steam version obv.)
