Poison and disease counters

What exactly do these counters do? Increase damage or resilience?
I looked around a bit, but couldn't find any specifics.

You lose the game if you get 10.

The poison or disease counters are used on debuffs to make them curable. For example, the enchanter slow spell "Forlorn Deeds" has 16 disease counters. The spell "Counteract Disease" reduces disease counters by 8, so if you cast Counteract Disease twice on a target who has Forlorn Deeds, it will remove that debuff.
